Transporting Readers back to Chicago’s Gilded Age

October 6th, 2010

Cambridge Who’s Who® VIP Member John V. Glavin, Author, Wilmette, IL

John V. Glavin, Author

After a 25 year career in education as the instructional supervisor of an English department, author John Glavin co-founded Dickinson Publishing House LLC with his daughter, Katherine, in early 2009. His idea was to independently publish his debut novel during a difficult economic climate, and to publish books by other writers who are unwilling to compromise literary integrity to become commercial.

Sparked by his passion for Chicago’s history and Victorian stories, John Glavin wrote the historical fiction novel, “Trapped on the Wheel,” which brings Chicago’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 back to life in meticulous detail. Set against Chicago’s World Fair, the story is about Alessandra, a young woman trying to escape a dominant parent and the trap awaiting most women at the time: an impending arranged marriage. Defying convention, Alessandra is able to seek opportunities of an independent life rather than the one laid out for her.

In the past year, Glavin’s novel has garnered positive reviews, winning Writer’s Digest and IPPY awards for Best Literary and Popular Fiction. Mr. Glavin received praise for his ability to interweave history and fiction, and for luring readers into the lives of his characters. “Glavin not only brings the Columbian Exposition to life with its stark, real prose, he has skillfully balanced the ingredients of fiction with impeccable research, transporting the reader to the actual locale of the story, and bringing the characters to life. He leaves the reader with the warm feeling that he has personally witnessed what happened,” Jack Coombe, a fellow historian and novelist, offered. John Glavin took his grand vision of capturing Chicago’s gilded age, and artfully depicted this timeless era in his novel. He is currently writing the sequel, “Striker!,” surrounding the railroad strike of 1894, which features many of the same characters. Mr. Glavin also tapped into his expert knowledge to provide content for “Real Estate Investing for the Dumbkuffs,” and prepared specific practice materials for “Building English Skills: Skill Practice Book Blue Level.”

Mr. Glavin was the English department chairman of Glenbrook North High School. During his administration, the school was named a Blue Ribbon School between 1983 and 1984. The U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private schools that are either academically superior, or display a high level of advancement in student achievement. In addition to writing, Mr. Glavin also teaches at the grammar school, high school and college levels.
